One of the biggest stands that the Mormon religion stands upon during their explanation is that every man woman and child has the right to choose between right and wrong and act on their own accord. This is a gift from God according to their belief and this is a test to see if an individual will use these traits to show their love for the Father. This is what is known as the agency. According to Joseph Smiths teaching is there are consequences when it comes to the total picture of the agency. They can choose what they want to do when they are here on earth but they are not able to choose the consequences of what is going to happen from their choices.
Naturally makingthe right choices would lead to happiness whereas the wrong ones are going to bring sorrow and dismay. Their stance is that one should not put the blame on another for the choices that they make. It will be individual who will stand before God and be accountable for every thought, word and action that was part of them during their time on earth. If these do not match with the commandments then they must be full of repentance in order to become clean and forgiven. So the Mormons base much of the teaching on the fact that their followers should do many good acts but not ones that they have to be told to do. They should act upon their own volition
Now as Christianity and most other religions believe that there is a certain age that a child becomes accountable for what they do. The Mormons believe that once the child reaches the age of eight then they are accountable. Up till that point the child is not able to commit sin and any child under the age is automatically covered by the atonement of Christ. However that doesn’t mean that the parent of the child is not going to be held responsible.
The Mormons have an interesting concept that they believe that men and women are not going to be held accountable because of what Adam did. The belief is that men commit enough of their own sins and they will be punished on that basis and are only accountable for their own sins.
They have a strong belief in opposition which means that there is good and bad that exists. If this were not so then man would not be able to use what Joseph calls the agency and it must be that man must prove himself to God by using his agency.
When it comes to suffering in the world that the explanation that the Mormons give is that it is a test and a necessity and that peace is only given to those that are truly following the commandments.
According to the Mormons accountability is the true plan of salvation that God has for his children. This is the only way that we can return to live with the heavenly Father and this is done through making a choice of our own to accept the test that God is giving us and to do so humbly and obediently. However there is a lack of where does the atonement of Christ come in to their religion.
